Windows Phone Xbox Live Review: Chickens Can't Fly

Chickens Can't Fly Lead

The 2022 Must Accept Games consisted by and large of established console franchises – titles that are guaranteed to sell based on name solitary. Yet for many gamers, the true standout title in the lineup was the sequel to a little-known indie game for Windows Phone. I speak, of course, virtually Chickens Tin can't Fly, the follow-upward to Chickens Can Dream – both from British developer AmusedSloth. In case the silly proper noun didn't clue you in, CCF (equally I'll now shorten information technology) is a highly creative title with a delightful sense of humor. Just lookout out – the difficulty is sometimes less friendly than the remainder of the game.

Don't tell PETA

Chickens Can't Fly

In CCF, you play equally a craven who must navigate a multifariousness of obstacles courses. The chicken is e'er falling downward, making for a sort of reverse Doodle Jump.  Tilting the phone left and correct steers the avian hero. Craven literally can't stop falling, but you can at least slow him down in a couple of means: touching walls cause shim to slide, while borer the screen flaps his wings. Yet, he continually gains speed the longer he stays live, then fifty-fifty with those moves at your disposal, things get pretty hectic. Thankfully his speed resets whenever you pass a checkpoint.

Laboratories

Chickens Can't Fly

The game'south 61 experiments (levels) are divided upwardly into 5 labs: Hatchery (tutorial levels), Abattoir, Cemetery, War machine, and Physics. These labs are more just dissimilar backdrops. Each i has unique powerups, powerdowns, and obstacles, making for a nice bit of variety. New items are usually introduced in their ain specific experiment, with creative titles like "Does Chicken similar 8-fleck?" which involves the Pixelizer item. This teaches players what the items do organically – a expert matter because the actual instructions are presented in drawings rather than text (ala Beards & Beaks), presumably to cut down on translation costs.

Experiments can have a multifariousness of dissimilar goals. Sometimes Chicken just needs to survive until the terminate. Other times he'south fighting against fourth dimension or has to pick up a certain number of items past the fourth dimension he reaches the end of the level. If you accomplish the bottom without coming together the experiment'south criteria, y'all neglect and have to retry it.

Scoring

Chickens Can't Fly

Chicken is always looking for corn to eat – it'south spread out everywhere and gives him points. When y'all complete a due north experiment, yous may earn a Bronze, Argent, or Gold medal depending on your score. Now here's the tricky part – simply collecting lots of corn won't usually go your score high enough for the golden. To reach the maximum rating, y'all'll need to take reward of the combo arrangement.

At any given time, Craven'southward combo multiplier is displayed at the top-left corner of the screen. Falling for a while without slowing downward boosts it to 2X, doubling the score earned from each piece of corn. But 2X isn't even enough for virtually Golds – that's where powerdowns come in. CCF rewards players for taking risks by collecting harmful items. These include items that shrink or grow the Chicken, an particular that reverses steering controls, several items that obscure the player'south view in some fashion, and many more. You lot also gain multipliers for catching on fire or getting poisoned, but both conditions will result in sure death if you don't cure them in time.

The combo system certainly adds a lot of replay value to the game since you'll ofttimes demand to try a phase more than in one case before you lot accomplish the Golden medal score. It can atomic number 82 to frustration too though. Some levels have score goals that are ridiculously hard to reach. Come across, every fourth dimension you play a level, the layout is randomized. This includes item frequency and location. Many times the randomly-generated level just won't have enough items to boost the multiplier high enough for the goal. I literally spent an hour replaying one five-minute level before the stars finally aligned and I managed to gold it. Thankfully, the developers are likely to fine-melody the more problematic levels with a future patch.

Other modes

Chickens Can't Fly

  • Survival: In one case y'all've completed a sure number of experiments within a lab, yous'll unlock that lab's Survival fashion. This model is basically the original Chickens Can Dream, since that game didn't accept individual experiments. Rather than ending later a certain number of checkpoints, Survival is fabricated upward of endless checkpoints, then it lasts every bit long as yous can stay alive. Passing checkpoints gives Chicken an extra life, so skilled players can potentially play for quite a while.
  • Weekly Challenge: These are specific Survival levels that change every week. This mode has its own global leaderboard, so players can actually compete confronting each other for high scores.

The bird is the word

CCF's cartoonish art style instills the game with loads of personality; everything is very well drawn. The music is well-equanimous and fits the game's zany personality. It gets onetime pretty rapidly though. The reason: the melody starts over each fourth dimension you replay a level. Since some levels crave a ton of replaying to pass or earn the Gold, you'll hear the aforementioned scrap of the vocal over and over ad nauseum. Amused Sloth plans to make the song loop in a future update, thankfully.

Extras

Chickens Can't Fly

CCF comes with six complimentary ringtones that are unlocked from the starting time. Awesome thought, but the ringtones are made up of chicken squawks. Yep, um… I can't imagine anyone but a small child really enjoying them. Why didn't they include the actual game music as a ringtone, I wonder? Far less annoying, avatar awards are coming in a hereafter update.

Achievements

I mentioned that earning Gold medals can exist frustrating, which means that the Achievement for earning all Golds volition be difficult if not impossible for many players to earn until the difficulty is rebalanced. Some other tough Achievement requires you to go over 300,000 points in a single level. Some players accept managed to go information technology, just no one has developed a consistent strategy for information technology only nevertheless.

I hate to brand a squawk about it, but CCF too has ii annoying grinding Achievements: Eliminate 1000 obstacles using the Butcher Shield, Holy Cantankerous, Nuke or EMP; and gather one million total corn. This sort of Accomplishment adds aught but boredom to whatsoever game. The meg corn one in item just takes absolutely forever, ugh. Amused Sloth has promised to alleviate the corn grind in some mode afterward, so information technology may exist less of a trouble in the future.

Overall Impression

Chickens Tin't Fly is i of the better Xbox Alive championship to come out in February. Merely the difficulty spikes and overly-time consuming Achievements keep the game from greatness - it's like getting ordering a box of white meat craven and finding that a third of the pieces are thighs. But when CCF's not frustrating the hell out of me, it'due south a hell of a lot of fun. Tickled Sloth has made an impressive Xbox Live debut – let'due south promise we hear more from them in the future.

Chickens Tin can't Fly costs $2.99 and at that place is a free trial. Don't wait for the erect's crow - pick information technology up here on the Marketplace today.
